What are flavonoids and what do they do for my body?

Flavonoids are natural compounds found in many fruits and vegetables, red wine, and purple grape juice. Many flavonoids are thought to be potent antioxidants. Wine and purple grape juice appear to be significant platelet inhibitors, meaning they make the platelets in the blood less likely to clot.

You are what you eat

This simple phrase is especially important for people at risk for heart disease. Eating right to reduce heart disease risk means you need to eat a variety of foods as well as consume less total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol. The American Medical Women’s Association has put together this simple advice that is based on dietary guidelines from the American Heart Association and the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Any questions regarding these recommendations and specific concerns, such as ensuring pregnant and older women meet their special nutritional needs, should be discussed with your health care provider.
